It was Lopez who opened the attacks at the Circuito de Getxo on the last categorized climb, but got a number of riders with him. However, the Spanish rider did not give up and wanted to make the difference on the descent, but took too many risks and he fell heavily.

“I just saw the video of my fall,” Lopez wrote on social media. “How lucky I was… This is cycling, I will come back in the best possible way. Thank you everyone for the support!”

Candice Lill’s rear wheel broke in spectacular fashion during the opening laps of the mountain bike event today at the Olympic Games.

“I rolled down one of the steep roll-offs, and my back wheel hit a rock at the bottom, I think, and it just exploded,” she explained. “I honestly don’t know [the state of the wheel now]. The rim is completely cracked, so the wheel is not round anymore. I blew the tyre wall off the rim and everything.”

“At first it was a shock. There was a big, loud noise, as well. I then had to get off my bike and start running,” Lill continued. “I had to run down to the tech zone to change the wheel. It was not actually too far, but it takes time to change the wheel and everything and get going.”

In full sprint speed Maxim Van Gils body checked Amaury Capiot causing a nasty crash in the bunch in the final meters of stage 13 of the Tour.

The Belgian rider has received a big fine of 1,500 Swiss Francs for his maneuver but the jury decided he can stay in the race.

Van Gils says it wasn’t his fault: “Arnaud was a bit far in the last kilometre. I wanted to take him forward on the left, and that went pretty well. Someone from Arkea-B&B dropped down and looked behind him. He hit me, or I hit him, and they fell behind me. There was definitely a gap of half a meter. I’m not a sprinter, so yes.”

Three of Jonas Vingegaard’s team mates crashed after a spectator prompted a mass pile-up in the 15th stage of the Tour de France on Sunday.

Nathan van Hooydonck hit the deck hard some 129km from the finish line with Sepp Kuss and Dylan van Baarle, also crashing after one of the Jumbo-Visma riders was put off balance by a spectator.

All three got back on their bikes, although Van Hooydonck spent a couple of minutes lying on the ground before re-starting.

Big scandal at the Giro Next Gen, the U23 version of the Italian grand tour, after the race jury decided to kick out no less than 31 riders.

The cyclists were recorded holding onto cars and motorcycles for a long time during the climb of the Stelvio. Amateur footage clearly shows how the riders used cars and motorbikes.

Of the riders disqualified, 24 were Italian and seven were foreign, including Belgian cyclist Tijl De Decker, who won this year’s Paris-Roubaix Under 23. Four team staff members and their team cars were also excluded from the race.

“What we saw was really offensive to those who correctly interpret this sport,” Italian cycling federation president Cordiano Dagnoni said on Thursday. “They are images that really hurt.

“It’s right to apply the rules and I’m above all disappointed by the behavior of the sporting directors in the team cars, because they should be the first to teach the youngsters how to respect the rules.”

Biniam Girmay is insanely popular in his homeland Eritrea and we witnessed that again today after his victory in the second stage of Tour de Suisse.

After his winning sprint, the Intermarché-Circus-Wanty rider was flooded like a true rock star by fans from his country.

“That’s great. This really means a lot to me. Winning in the Tour de Suisse for the first time and then in front of so many fans, it’s amazing,” Girmay said.

“Whether I’m going to party with the fans? There are still six stages to ride, so the race is not over yet. I am now focusing on the next few days before celebrating with my fans.”
